The Path To Faster Payments Ubiquity Starts With You
Objective
The FPC–ASC X9 Joint Standards Steering Committee (JSSC) was established to address standards-related challenges that limit the adoption and scalability of faster payments. By combining the U.S. Faster Payments Council's (FPC) real-world industry expertise with ASC X9's trusted technical standards development infrastructure, the JSSC serves as the industry's central forum for strategic standards alignment.
The JSSC's primary objective is to enable a high-quality, secure, and consistent faster payments experience through the joint development and application of interoperable technical standards that drive alignment across the payments ecosystem.
Committee Focus
The JSSC functions as a critical bridge between industry pain points and actionable technical solutions. Its work is authoritative, technical, and trusted — translating real-world implementation challenges into structured standards activities that accelerate industry progress while reducing friction across payment rails.
Seamless communication across diverse payment rails, aligned with global frameworks such as ISO 20022.
Coordinated, end-to-end standards development across FPC strategic priorities and ASC X9 technical committees.
The same technical rigor, resilience, and security that characterize ASC X9's long-standing leadership in financial services standards.
High-Level Framework
The JSSC operates under a framework designed to support faster payments modernization at scale.
Maintain alignment between the FPC's strategic priorities — Reach, Experience, and Trust — and ASC X9's technical committees for a coordinated, end-to-end approach.
Serve as the industry's "eyes and ears" — identifying emerging needs, assessing standards readiness, and translating insights into a prioritized roadmap.
Facilitate domestic standards development that enables seamless communication across diverse payment rails while aligning with global frameworks like ISO® 20022.
Ensure faster payments initiatives benefit from the same technical rigor, resilience, and security that defines ASC X9's leadership in financial services standards.
Advance toward a payment ecosystem in which anyone can safely and securely pay anyone, anywhere, at any time — backed by clear implementation guidance and technical toolkits.
Provide structured pathways — including observer roles and joint participation — for FPC members to influence the technical standards process across all stakeholder segments.
2026 Roadmap
The JSSC is developing an integrated roadmap that progresses from foundational alignment to demonstrated standards leadership.
Establish communication channels and complete a baseline inventory of relevant standards to identify gaps and areas of opportunity.
Implement a structured prioritization framework that evaluates initiatives based on industry impact, feasibility, and probability of success.
Launch formal member participation through ASC X9 roles, enabling FPC members to directly contribute to standards development efforts.
Deploy joint education initiatives and incorporate standards outcomes into FPC work group activities to drive tangible industry value.
Leadership & Organization
The JSSC is governed by a joint delegation of members, with equal representation from each organization, ensuring diverse industry perspectives and balanced governance.
Help shape the future of faster payments standards by engaging directly with the work driving industry alignment.
